Event dates

The beginner intensive course is designed for all of those who prefer to learn at a fast pace or are not able to attend beginner classes regularly in the evenings, or would simply like to recap their basics after a break.

The beginner intensive is a fast-track course with the aim to get you into Tango and up to the next level quickly. It is targeted at everyone, especially those who have never danced at all.

You will learn material usually covered over 10 hours of one-hour beginner classes, and is more-or-less equivalent to the material taught in our Beginners Tango DVD.

Whatever stage you're at, this is a great opportunity to work on the most important aspect of Tango—the basics.

Please reserve your place by booking or you will miss out! Email us for more details.

Rojo y Negro intensive beginners class left us feeling that we could quite possibly tango down a side street in Argentina. The combination of firm teaching, great music and a fun attitude was an evening well spent. We loved it!

Event description

Milonga Poema is four years old! We thank all of you, our friends from London, and our many, many guests from abroad, who've been coming to dance with us on Thursday nights!

Stefano Fava and Gisela Vidal

When we first opened the doors to our nascent milonga on the 14th of February 2008, it was Valentine's. Since then, we always celebrate the two with a double party!

This year is no exception, and we bring you very special guests—we've invited a lovely couple, Stefano Fava and Gisela Vidal from Tango in Action to teach and perform for us!

Stefano recently returned to London with his beautiful new partner Gisela Vidal from their long tour in Asia.

Stefano and Gisela will take the evening's workshop, with a specially picked Valentine's lesson theme (hint: expect something hot). Following the class, we'll be playing a selection of the best tango music, with lots of romantic numbers, chocolate and prizes! Stefano and Gisela will dazzle us with one of their brilliant performances during the milonga (around 10:30pm).

Martin Alvarado

Event description

This year, Women's day falls on our Thursday night milonga, and for this evening we've lined up something very different. We have a very special guest for our milonga, a world-class Argentine tango singer—Martin Alvarado.

Martin Alvarado is one of the finest and most significant tango singers today, and has won wide acclaim across Europe and in his home city of Buenos Aires, performing at major music festivals and venues.

Martin is on his 21st tour of Europe, and one of his dates in London is at our milonga. This tour is hot on the heels of his debut solo tour here in November and follows successful performances in Midnight Tango, the hugely popular stage show starring Vincent and Flavia, of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing fame.

Artist background

Alvarado is renowned for his warm powerful tenor voice, his charismatic and easy going rapport with his audiences and his outstanding repertoire which features tangos and Argentine songs that have a highly poetic quality and timelessness, often within a romantic or emotional context. Some of them are tango classics, and others have been rarely recorded and almost forgotten.

He strongly believes that tango is a living language which has to evolve and remain relevant so, with his choice of repertoire and the particular modern way he phrases his songs, he brings to it a contemporary and creative sound, but one which remains, at the same time, universally accessible.

Alvarado discovered his talent for singing at the age of 19 while studying guitar in Buenos Aires. A few years later he travelled to Spain where he was spotted singing in Barcelona and invited to perform in Finland, where tango is a hugely popular activity. News of his talent quickly spread in Finland and within two months of arriving there, he was performing with the Tampere Filharmonia orchestra.

His albums “Martin Alvarado&rdquo (2003), “Asi es mi tango” (2006, with Leopoldo Federico as special guest star), “Tango Norte, Tango Sur” (2008, made in Finland with Quinteto Otra Vez) and "Más Allá" (2010, recorded with Horacio Avilano and his trio) have given Alvarado worldwide prestige. He is currently working on his fifth album with Horacio Avilano and sixth album with Finnish pianist and bandoneon player Mikko Helenius.
