Tango for Actors
We have designed a highly specialised Tango course, specifically targeted at actors.
Its sole purpose is to help actors put their best foot forward at auditions, requiring Tango, or even another dance skill. Many roles now require a dance sequence or several, or merely the suggestion of a dance, through speech, attitude and invisible body language that is not necessarily intuitive, even to a seasoned professional who does not dance.
The curriculum focuses on the basics of the Argentine Tango, and will specifically concentrate on theatrical qualities, so that they come across, primarily at an audition, and by extension, on stage. Many of the skills taught at the Tango for Actors course are transferable to other dances, and will project the desired image even if the role calls for another partner dance.
Key skills taught
You will work on a number of aspects that are important to not only the Argentine Tango, but a number of other partner dances. Notable transferable skills you will learn are:
- Work on your perfect Tango poise that will make you stick out in any audition
- Gain confidence and improve your stage presence
- Get greater sense for your expressive capacity as a performer
- Learn how to communicate in the Tango language with your partner
- Practice to be in the moment and truthful to your partner and music through Tango moves
- Challenge yourself to take emotional risks
- Work on unlocking your own emotional power, and expressing this through Tango moves
- Gain an intricate appreciation of the roles of the male and female, leader and follower
You will gain an appreciation of the different styles of the Argentine Tango, and how it differs from the other styles, such as ballroom Tango. Much emphasis will be placed on teaching the principles of improvisation within Tango, opening up a world of possibilities, rather than slavish memorising of sequences and mechanical learning by rote.
This improvisational nature of the Argentine Tango will teach you that no two social dances are the same—through this, you will learn the choreographic possibilities in Tango, which will lead you to making your own tango choreographies. As part of the course, you will be taught a short choreography, which you will be expected to perform, much as in a scenario faced at an audition.
These experiences and skills will enable you to present your best qualities at auditions, and how to disguise your weaknesses, maximising your chances of landing the [dance] role.
