Pugliese and Dramatic Tango

Discover Pugliese and dramatic tango - intensive workshop - Rojo y Negro

The ultimate expression

Pugliese's music is usually perceived as a difficult music to dance to. That's also why we love it: it is challenging and you need some special tools to dance to it in a way that it deserves. In this workshop we will first focus on honing the listening skills and preparing the body for dancing to Pugliese music better, followed by adaptation of movement vocabulary to the music.

If you're not familiar with Pugliese's body of work, listen to some of his most famous compositions you are likely to hear: La Yumba and Recuerdo.

The starting point is understanding the rhythm of vals and then how to adapt your vocabulary to that rhythm. Understanding, hearing and interpreting syncopations

Vals (Waltz) is the member of the Tango family which really exposes your musical skills fully. Even though the same vocabulary is used in Vals as in Tango, the alignment of choreographic elements to the music is different, which we call musicality. If aspects of musicality are practised correctly, you will achieve the required fluidity in your movement and ’glide”. This workshop will transform your Vals!

New Tango film: Glories of Tango

Glories of Tango at the JIFF

Film screening, followed by a tango lesson and milonguita

We're excited to be special tango guests, as a part of this new tango film premiere, Glories of Tango, showing in the UK International Jewish Film Festival. Very few movies are made on the theme of tango, so don't miss your chance to get some glimpses into the past of our dance.

Glories of Tango—an audience award winner at the Phoenix Film Festival—revolves around Fermín:

Having started a residency at a Buenos Aires hospital, Jewish psychiatrist Ezequiel is especially perplexed by the behaviour of one of his patients, Fermín, who communicates only by quoting lyrics and titles of tango songs. Suspecting that Fermín has been misdiagnosed for decades, Ezequiel starts researching his history, uncovering some dark secrets from both his patient’s and his country’s pasts. His research would also make him fall in love – with tango, and with Eva, a tango instructor and Fermín’s granddaughter. Glories of Tango is as delightful and intense as its thrilling dance scenes.

Explore the richness of the close embrace

The close embrace sounds very straightforward, but there are many fine aspects which need to be mindfully explored. The reward of this exploration is a deep insight into its marvels, with which you can unlock your full potential in enjoying the embrace.

Partner not required. If you come as a couple you can stay together or decide to change partners, this is optional. Please note, advance booking is essential to help us ensure an even ratio whenever possible.

MarÍa de Buenos Aires

Tango opera by Astor Piazzolla, produced by Operaview

Maria de Buenos Aires at the Arcola Theatre, August/September 2016
María was seduced by the tango. Now she is the most bewitching dancer in Buenos Aires, and the talk of its red light district. But when the languishing Piazzolla is driven mad by her ‘fatal passion’, he conspires to stop it dead. María is made of flesh and blood, but her spirit will to be harder to kill…

We are very excited to be part of Operaview's production of María de Buenos Aires. We can't wait to bring this opera to life this August and September! See you there!

Rhythmical Patterns Intensive Workshop

Rhythmical patterns for milonga and tango intensive workshop - Rojo y Negro

for Milonga and Tango

Music is structured, just like a good dance should be. Learning to improvise in a structured way is hard and that is why this workshop is there to help.

You will work on identifying rhythmical patterns in both music and movement and practice putting them together in an economical way, and with a bit of spice too.

Because of their time signature (2/4 in milonga and both 2/4 and 4/4 in tango), all the learned patterns can be applied to both milongas and rhythmical tangos. We will work on the subtleties of both genres, explore linear and circular patterns as well as a mixture of both; traveling in different directions relative to the line of dance, and at different speeds and levels.
